Womanhood on Internet: Exploring the world of femcels, toxic feminist, and girlbloggers. 🕊️☁️🎧🤍
It been a long time since I last stopped by on Blogspot to post anything. I actually come here everyday. The only thing that stops me is time and energy. Currently, I am spending my free time on the newly launched threads app - just scrolling through content of some of my favourite meme pages. I hate it how established content creators are bringing their pathetic selves here too. Everyone in today's day and age is a content creator. Yes, you too. If you're making reels, posting pictures of yourselves, and having a good time on social media. You are a content creator essentially. The only difference is you don't get paid for it.
Moving on. I wanted to talk about a specific category of content creators I find extremely problematic. Well, to be honest and fair, everyone is problematic. In India, back in the day, artists like Carry Minati would sit on their laptops, curse in Hindi while playing video games. He gained massive fan following for releasing his frustrations and people enjoyed it. Today, we have Arpit Bala. Other content creators are also making reels, posts showcasing their frustration with people. Please count me in, I do that to entertain my friends. I crack jokes on my shortcomings, and of life in general. That's how I cope with things. It's my process. And you'd be surprised that most people are doing the same thing. Except, on a more large scale basis.
Girlbloggers are women on the internet posting their 'inner deep, and dark monologues' with cute and pinkish aesthetics. They have a very generic sense of taste in Lana Del Rey, Minnie Martinez, Sophia Coppola's Virgin Suicides and Marie Antionette, or Megan Fox's stills in Jennifer's Body, Gone Girl, Mean Girls, Mia Goth's Pearl, and Emma Robert's Chanel Oberlin. Femcels, is an umbrella term under which we have our girlbloggers.
So how did this culture came into being? It started with a woman and her computer in 1997. Even before the dudes came up with their incel culture, a woman named Alana, established a website for lonely people called 'Alana's involuntary Celibate project' which has changed its name to "Love not anger" since 2018, after several violent attacks were made by poster boys of incel communities. Today, she is somewhat ashamed of what her innocent project has promoted people to do. However, unlike incel groups, the femcel communities are not bounded by definitions. They are just women who cannot succeed in their love life and have a dard-e-disco moment on the internet.
Sometime ago, I had conversations with my cousin (a year older) on the subject of dating. And she had some legitimate reasons not to date anybody because she’s too invested in making a career and getting into the right schools. Which to me seems completely normal. I think, in our age, especially in the circles I am currently in: there's a sort of pressure that you should date someone, because everyone's dating or going on bumble dates. I think it's completely normal to put yourself and your interest before everything else. It does not make you anything less than a human.
(I am exclusively speaking for that category of people who can't juggle romantic relationships with their academics, I think I fit here low-key. Simple creatures like me strike off one goal at a time from our list.)
My favourite meme page posted some words for GIRL BLOGGING on threads stating, "yeh ladkiyon ne unhinged shabdh naya seekha hain kya....omg I'm so unhinged (videshi create mode girlboss pages ke post recycle kardiye)". It sucks to hear it from them. Especially when I had re-posted two or three posts of girl boss barbie on threads. It must've landed on their explore page, who knows. The algorithm on threads is pretty bad right now. Some users are optimistic about its growth but I doubt people are returning on the platform.
I think, now I have realised these quirky posts are feeding off delusion. Firstly, girlblogging or femcels are constructing notions of feminine beauty that are quite dangerous. "You need to manifest to have doe eyes, perfect waist, perfect body". They act as large scale influencers and are continuously sending out wrong messages to young girls. In reality, they are not keeping well, mentally. Imagine, the amount of damage these groups can do. Secondly, they encourage, unhealthy lifestyles. This pushes their followers into having serious eating disorders. Thirdly, they are confused themselves! For example, some bloggers would like to believe that their purpose is nothing but being the best versions of themselves, others believe that they hate everything about this world and are in their self destruction era.
Wait..wait hold up. Is this the new age of feminism?
Feminism is a huge term. Just like any other philosophical thought, it has several verticals to it, distributed through all forms of media. I do like to believe, that certain schools of thought about girlblogging defy the standards established by traditional societies which forces women to break the types and emerge out of their shells to embrace their true nature. I think that's a good thing girlblogging/femcels aim to do.
However, I can’t downplay on the fact that "a woman is a woman's worst enemy". There once existed a reddit page under the title R/reddit which was a transphobic and racist community. On one hand feminism aims to be inclusive and diverse grouping of people of all gender types, on the other hand the so-called feminist are beaming with pride because they are "faired skin" or are simply thinking that being white is superior than other races, being feminine and of a certain body structure makes one more desirable than the other. As I mentioned before, this is straight-up delusional.
Though, I am all up for the truest format of freedom of speech and expression- essentially allowing everyone to speak as they please. I am afraid that certain "Stacy's" (fem. word to describe chads) would sound more sincere in their hate speech and do little good in terms of value to the whole community. In this way, people who would be reading their blogs, posts, or consuming any form of content might believe that this is the ultimate truth and accept it as it is. As a consequence of which more hatred would spread across channels.
If you are on internet and goofing around, you should know that your participation on these platforms comes with great responsibility.
I take your leave my loves, until next time....
